Casino Royale Book Pdf 25: Read the Classic Adventure of 007 in His First Mission

Casino Royale had been produced as a 1954 television episode starring Barry Nelson as Bond and Peter Lorre as the villain Le Chiffre, as well as a non-canonical 1967 ensemble satirical film starring David Niven, Peter Sellers and Woody Allen. Eon Productions gained the rights to Casino Royale in 1999 after Sony Pictures Entertainment exchanged them for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's rights to Spider-Man.[10] In March 2004, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade began writing a screenplay for Pierce Brosnan as Bond, aiming to bring back the flavour of Ian Fleming's original Bond novels.[11] An early draft featured Bond backpacking in Madagascar and playing chess with Lord Lucan.[12] As the drafts got closer to the final storyline, the opening scene in which Bond earns his 00 license was originally going to consist of an adaptation of either the short stories "The Hildebrand Rarity" or "007 in New York." Rather than bombing the Skyfleet jet, there would have been a hijacking of a cruise ship in Cape Town.[12] Paul Haggis' main contribution was to rewrite the climax of the film. He explained, "the draft that was there was very faithful to the book and there was a confession, so in the original draft, the character confessed and killed herself. She then sent Bond to chase after the villains; Bond chased the villains into the house. I don't know why but I thought that Vesper had to be in the sinking house and Bond has to want to kill her and then try and save her."[13] Haggis also said they wanted "to do for Bond what Batman Begins did for Batman."[14] Broccoli and Wilson were mindful that "Die Another Day had become too fantastical",[15] feeling the next film should be more realistic.

In January 2007, Casino Royale became the first Bond film ever to be shown in mainland Chinese cinemas. The Chinese version was edited before release, with the reference to the Cold War re-dubbed and new dialogue added during the poker scene explaining the process of Texas hold 'em, as the game is less familiar in China (this addition is reminiscent of dialogue that was added to the 1954 American TV adaptation to explain the rules of baccarat, the game featured in the original book). Casino Royale has earned approximately $11.7 million in China since its opening on 30 January on 468 screens,[62] including a record opening weekend collection for a non-Chinese film, with $1.5 million.[63]

The scent and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in themorning. Then the soul-erosion produced by high gambling--a compost ofgreed and fear and nervous tension--becomes unbearable and the sensesawake and revolt from it.

The barrier surrounding the caisse comes as high as your chin and thecaissier, who is generally nothing more than a minor bank clerk, sitson a stool and dips into his piles of notes and plaques. These areranged on shelves. They are on a level, behind the protecting barrier, with your groin. The caissier has a cosh and a gun to protect him, andto heave over the barrier and steal some notes and then vault back andget out of the casino through the passages and doors would beimpossible. And the caissiers generally work in pairs.

Bond reflected on the problem as he collected the sheaf of hundredthousand and then the sheaves of ten thousand franc notes. With anotherpart of his mind, he had a vision of tomorrow's regular morning meetingof the casino committee.

As he gave a thousand francs to the vestiaire and walked down thesteps of the casino, Bond made up his mind that Le Chiffre would in nocircumstances try to rob the caisse and he put the contingency out ofhis mind. Instead he explored his present physical sensations. He feltthe dry, uncomfortable gravel under his evening shoes, the bad, harshtaste in his mouth and the slight sweat under his arms. He could feelhis eyes filling their sockets. The front of his face, his nose andantrum, were congested. He breathed the sweet night air deeply andfocused his senses and his wits. He wanted to know if anyone hadsearched his room since he had left it before dinner.

This man on the Gleaner, whose name was Fawcett, had been book-keeperfor one of the leading turtle-fisheries on the Cayman Islands. One ofthe men from the Caymans who had volunteered on the outbreak of war, hehad ended up as a Paymaster's clerk in a small Naval Intelligenceorganization in Malta. At the end of the war, when, with a heavy heart,he was due to return to the Caymans, he was spotted by the section ofthe Secret Service concerned with the Caribbean. He was strenuouslytrained in photography and in some other arts and, with the quietconnivance of an influential man in Jamaica, found his way to thepicture desk of the Gleaner.

'Well, here's the dope, Bill.' He handed over the black folder with thered star which stood for Top Secret. 'And for God's sake lookenthusiastic when you give it him. And tell him I'll wait here and reada good code-book while he's considering it. He may want some moredetails, and anyway I want to see you two don't pester him with anythingelse until he's finished.'

Bond knew Jamaica well, so he asked to be controlled from there and topass as a Jamaican plantocrat whose father had made his pile in tobaccoand sugar and whose son chose to play it away on the stock markets andin casinos. If inquiries were made, he would quote Charles DaSilva ofChaftery's, Kingston, as his attorney. Charles would make the storystick.

Bond had always been a gambler. He loved the dry riffle of the cards andthe constant unemphatic drama of the quiet figures round the greentables. He liked the solid, studied comfort of card-rooms and casinos, the well-padded arms of the chairs, the glass of champagne or whisky atthe elbow, the quiet unhurried attention of good servants. He was amusedby the impartiality of the roulette ball and of the playing-cards--andtheir eternal bias. He liked being an actor and a spectator and from hischair to take part in other men's dramas and decisions, until it came tohis own turn to say that vital 'yes' or 'no', generally on a fifty-fiftychance.

He had made a fool of himself. The game had been interrupted for atleast ten minutes, a delay unheard of in a respectable casino, but nowthe cards were waiting for him in the shoe. They must not fail him. Hefelt his heart lift at the prospect of what was to come.

'We found a good deal in childish hiding-places. The ball-cock in thelavatory yielded an interesting little code-book and we found some moreof your papers taped to the back of a drawer. All the furniture has beentaken to pieces and your clothes and the curtains and bedclothes havebeen cut up. Every inch of the room has been searched and all thefittings removed. It is most unfortunate for you that we didn't find thecheque. If we had, you would now be comfortably in bed, perhaps with thebeautiful Miss Lynd, instead of this.' He lashed upwards.

'Torture is a terrible thing,' he was saying as he puffed at a freshcigarette, 'but it is a simple matter for the torturer, particularlywhen the patient,' he smiled at the word, 'is a man. You see, my dearBond, with a man it is quite unnecessary to indulge in refinements. Withthis simple instrument, or with almost any other object, one can cause aman as much pain as is possible or necessary. Do not believe what youread in novels or books about the war. There is nothing worse. It is notonly the immediate agony, but also the thought that your manhood isbeing gradually destroyed and that at the end, if you will not yield, you will no longer be a man.

'Forgive me, my friend,' he said. 'It is all over now and you are insafe hands. All is well and the whole plan has gone splendidly. We haveannounced that Le Chiffre shot his two accomplices and then committedsuicide because he could not face an inquiry into the union funds.Strasbourg and the north are in an uproar. He was considered a greathero there and a pillar of the Communist Party in France. This story ofbrothels and casinos has absolutely knocked the bottom out of hisorganization and they're all running around like scalded cats. At themoment the Communist Party is giving out that he was off his head. Butthat hasn't helped much after Thorez's breakdown not long ago. They'rejust making it look as if all their big shots were gaga. God knows howthey're going to unscramble the whole business.'

'It's all very fine,' said Bond, 'but I've been thinking about thesethings and I'm wondering whose side I ought to be on. I'm getting verysorry for the Devil and his disciples such as the good Le Chiffre. TheDevil has a rotten time and I always like to be on the side of theunderdog. We don't give the poor chap a chance. There's a Good Bookabout goodness and how to be good and so forth, but there's no Evil Bookabout evil and how to be bad. The Devil has no prophets to write his TenCommandments and no team of authors to write his biography. His case hasgone completely by default. We know nothing about him but a lot of fairystories from our parents and schoolmasters. He has no book from which wecan learn the nature of evil in all its forms, with parables about evilpeople, proverbs about evil people, folk-lore about evil people. All wehave is the living example of the people who are least good, or our ownintuition.

'I feel very guilty,' she said sitting down beside him. 'But I've beenbathing every day while you've been lying here. The doctor said I was toand Head of S said I was to, so, well, I just thought it wouldn't helpyou for me to be moping away all day long in my room. I've found awonderful stretch of sand down the coast and I take my lunch and gothere every day with a book and I don't come back till the evening. There's a bus that takes me there and back with only a short walk overthe dunes, and I've managed to get over the fact that it's on the waydown that road to the villa.'

After a breakfast which was an effort for both of them, Vesper said shehad a headache and would stay in her room out of the sun. Bond took abook and walked for miles down the beach. By the time he returned he hadargued to himself that they would be able to sort the problem out overlunch. 2ff7e9595c
